Mats happen — the question is removing them safely, without hurting your dog.

Even well-cared-for coats can mat, especially around the ears, legs, and collar area. Heavy matting pulls tight against the skin and can be uncomfortable or even painful to remove, so we take it slow and use the right tools and technique for the coat and the mat's severity. For dogs with extensive matting, a shorter, more comfortable cut is sometimes the kinder option than hours of dematting — we'll always talk it through with you first.
We feel through the coat to judge how tight the mats sit against the skin and how much can safely be worked out.
If dematting would take longer than your dog can comfortably tolerate, we'll say so and talk through a shorter cut instead.
Mats are worked out gradually with the right tools, in stages, with breaks whenever your dog needs one.
Tight mats pull on the skin, so removing them can be uncomfortable — which is exactly why we go slowly and stop when a dog has had enough. When matting is severe, a short cut is usually kinder than hours of dematting.
Because no two matted coats are the same. Charging by time means you only pay for the work your dog's coat actually needs, rather than a flat rate that has to guess.
It depends how tight the mats are and how close to the skin they sit. We'll always tell you honestly what's possible before we start, and we won't put your dog through more than is fair.
Regular brushing between grooms, especially behind the ears, under the legs, and around the collar. Keeping to a consistent grooming schedule is the single biggest help.
Because mat severity varies so much, dematting is priced by time. Please call us before booking so we can look at the coat and give you an honest estimate.
